The name of the plant comes from the Latin word salvare, which means to save, to protect. So sage saves people from many ailments.

Long seen by people medicinal properties sage - disinfecting, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and hemostatic due to the chemical composition of this plant. Its leaves, flowers and stems contain valuable essential oils with beneficial properties.

They can be found in all numerous types of salvia, but the greatest content of these oils is in medicinal or pharmacy sage, for which this type of salvia received such a name. Its leaves contain up to 3% essential oils, which have bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties.


In addition, this plant contains other useful substances: camphor, which has a beneficial effect on the respiratory system, flavonoids (vitamin P), which help to strengthen the walls of capillaries and blood vessels and reduce their permeability, tannins, which have hemostatic and anti-inflammatory effects. The leaves also contain alkaloids, tannins, oleanolic and ursolic acids, and other substances.

Preparations made from the leaves and flowers of sage officinalis have a disinfectant, anti-inflammatory, astringent, hemostatic, emollient, diuretic effect, and reduce perspiration.

Sage is used in the form of decoctions or infusions and tinctures - for rinsing the mouth as an astringent and antiseptic for stomatitis, bleeding gums, sore throat, and inhalation with decoctions or essential oil is recommended by doctors for inflammation of the respiratory tract.

Experts believe that salvia officinalis is one of the best stimulants for the immune system. In addition, it improves attention, thinking, memory, increasing efficiency.



Infusion of sage for stomatitis

To obtain it, you need to pour 2 tablespoons of the finished raw material with a glass of boiling water (200 ml). Insist wrapped for 15 minutes, then strain the infusion. You can also brew this infusion in a thermos. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with them for stomatitis. The same infusion will help with angina - you also need to gargle them several times a day.

They drink such an infusion to increase immunity and improve well-being, it is also useful for colds and bronchitis. However, you do not need to get carried away with this drug: traditional healers recommend drinking no more than one glass of such an infusion per day for medicinal purposes.

Sage tea

Broth in milk

To prepare it, you need to add one teaspoon of dry sage leaves to a glass of milk brought to a boil (200 ml). To enhance the effect, you can moisten a cotton swab with this infusion and keep it on a sore tooth. The cotton wool needs to be changed from time to time, moistening with a new portion of the infusion.

In folk medicine, sage is used to treat many diseases, for example, sore throat, diseases of the throat, teeth and gums, cough, bronchitis, pneumonia, inflammatory diseases of the genitourinary system, gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcers with low acidity of gastric juice; inflammation of the liver and gallbladder, hemorrhoids and others. This plant is also useful in the treatment of external diseases - burns, ulcers, frostbite.

Infusion of medicinal sage

This universal recipe in folk medicine is used in the absence of appetite, for pain in the stomach, for nausea, gastrointestinal diseases, urinary incontinence, sore throat, and especially for neurosis of the heart and neurasthenia, as well as for colds.

Preparing such an infusion is quite simple: for this you need to take two teaspoons of dry leaves or sage herbs and pour them with half a liter of boiling water (500 ml). Insist for two hours and strain. Take 100 ml 3-4 times daily before meals.

Sage infusion for kidney inflammation

To prepare it, you need to pour one tablespoon of dry grass with a glass of boiling water, leave for one hour. Then strain the infusion and take half a glass three times a day before meals.

Infusion of sage for the treatment of gastritis

To obtain it, pour two teaspoons of dry sage herb with two glasses of boiling water (400 ml). Insist half an hour, drain. Take the infusion one tablespoon after two hours.

Infusion of sage for insomnia

For its preparation, one teaspoon of dry herb of sage pharmacy is poured with a glass of boiling water (200 ml) and insisted for a quarter of an hour. Drink in the evening before bed. This infusion also helps with increased nervous excitability.

Infusion from bags under the eyes

To obtain it, pour one teaspoon of dry sage herb with half a glass (100 ml) of boiling water. Insist half an hour, strain the infusion. Then divide it in two - heat one part, cool the other. Then use it alternately: dip a cotton swab into a warm infusion, apply to the swellings and hold for two or three minutes, then - into a cold infusion, apply again and keep the same time.

Sage ointment for sore joints

To obtain it, you need to take five tablespoons of dry sage herb, finely crushed (into powder), and add five tablespoons of interior lard to it. After that, everything must be thoroughly mixed and the resulting mixture is sent to a water bath. Keep there on very low heat until the mass turns into a liquid state. Then you need to strain it through a fine sieve to prevent even the smallest lumps.

Place the resulting ointment in a dark glass container with a lid. Keep refrigerated. To treat sore joints or back pain, you need to take a small amount of ointment (1 teaspoon), warm it up and rub it thoroughly into the sore spot. Then the oiled place needs to be insulated

Contraindications

Pharmaceutical sage has its own contraindications. It is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation, as well as for children under three years of age. Also, this plant should not be used with reduced thyroid function, with kidney disease in the acute stage and low blood pressure. Some people may be allergic to this plant. In addition, prolonged excessive consumption of sage can lead to overdose and poisoning. Therefore, before starting treatment, it is worth consulting a doctor.
